The Messenger Code

Messengers are exempt from the Warrior Code entirely, besides basic rules of lifestyle and schedules. Instead, they have their own Code. It is as follows:
  1. Your loyalty must be to your Leader, Deputy and Medicine Cat. You owe nothing to other cats, but these three must be obeyed.
  2. You will show respect, but not loyalty, to the opposite Clan's Leader, Deputy and Medicine Cat.
  3. You may not hunt on the opposite Clan's territory, though you may cross over to it as you please.
  4. You are not to kill another cat, even in self defense.
  5. Prey is killed only to be eaten. If you are not going to eat it, bring it home for the Clan.
  6. A kit must be six moons old to be taken as apprentice, and then trained for at least three moons, until they are deemed ready to take full responsibility.
  7. Before taking their warrior name, an apprentice must cross into the opposite Clan's territory and spend a full day there, eating nothing, and memorizing all Messenger paths. When they return, they will tell which animal they felt guided them, and will take that name, then keep silent vigil until nightfall.
  8. You may choose any mate you want and have as many kits as you please, so long as there are always two Messengers on duty, and your mate is from the same Clan. In fact, Medicine Cats are only allowed mates and kits if the mate is a Messenger.
  9. The Word of the Clan leader is law, and Code.
